THE WAY TO SAY IT ... Normally 1 would say and L
I do say “Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year” to 1
you, my secret loves, who read “On the Town”. But |
just in case 1 have some “secret loves” who would un- I
derstand it better said another way, let me say Feliz I
Navidatf, Buon Natale, Joyeux Noel, Frohliche Weih- I
nachten, Gezellige Kerstmis, Geidelig Jul and, to my ft
Hawaiian friends, Mele Kalikimaka! In case there are I
some who say it still another way — write me a note and I
let me know what 1 should have said! . . .
THE INTERNATIONAL SET . . . Borough President "
Edward Dudley and his adorable Missus, Rae, jetted ~
away from it all and spent a few days in Trinidad. Af
ter some of those all-night-sessions of hearings of the
Board of Estimate—Heavens, how he must have need
ed it! .. .
Estelle Mourning still telling folks about the “time
of your life” she and her Floyd (Dr. to you) had in Nas
sau, BWI . . .
Louise Parker, the girl “with the velvety voice
with a wide range” home from two months of con-
certizing in Europe where she was triumphal! .. .
’Twas a delightful experience sharing some of my d
personal friends with some of our international visitors I
of South America last week who were Miss Diva Gut- I
ierrez of Colombia: Mrs. Celia Osun de Hernandez of I
Mexico and Mrs. Yolanda Tognozzi Munhoz of Brazil. I
The ladies are here under the auspicies of Jhe Methodist I
Office for the United Nations on what is called “world I
understanding teams”. One of the ladies said that her I
family had sent her a letter to come home because they I
missed her so much. Her. Spanishrto-English transla- I
tion was: “World Fixer, come home”.
Well, I tell you, she is really a “world fixer”. I I
am sure no one who ever met these three in the U.S.A., I
thanks to the Methodist Church, will ever again forget I
our neighbors South of the Border. And for those I
Protestant’s like me, who thought all of South America I
was Catholic, you are mistaken. There are lots of us I
Protestants there and Jews, too.
Sharing the evening and telling the ladies a little I
about our“American fixing” (and believe me we need I
a lot of fixing, in a lot of ways, in a lot of places!) were I

If the president of the American Friends of Liberia,
Isabelle Edwin, founder Inez Dickens Gumbs and the
rest of the members of that group look sort of “on
cloud nine” these days; they are that happy over the
cablegram from President W. V.S. Tubman of Liberia
in appreciation of the birthday message the group sent !
him on the recent 68th birthday celebration . . .
SCENE AND HEARD . . . Lovely Willie Marie Wash
ington, daughter of the Willie Washingtons of Green
ville, S.C., majored in mathematics and graduated with
honors at Hampton Institute; was given training and
pay at the IBM company here and now has a position
with the company as a System Engineer in Orlando,
Fla. Mama and Papa both teach. While here she visit
ed her cousins, the William Logans, and the Fritz Pol-!
lards, who are family friends. Inspiring, eh? . . .
Lucy Brown, daughter of the Ted Browns of N.Y.C.,
is a classmate of Lucy Baines Johnson at the National
Cathedral High School for Girls. And I don’t have to
tell you that Lucy Baines is the daughter of President
Lyndon B. Johnson! In the words of my favorite
Binger, Pearl Bailey, “That ain’t no bad crowd to hang
out with!”

THE ELEGANT — Perhaps the one word to describe
the Riverton apartment of beautiful Julie Hunter would
be “elegant”! It has wall to wall carpeting — all white;

broken only with touches of orange here and there.

The child wore a long white
hand embroidered dress trimmed
with imported lace. She was

her mother's dress.

Mrs. Pharoah's
97th Birthday
Mrs. Florence Van Houton
Pharoah, pianist and singer, re
cently celebrated her 97th birth
day at the Bird S. Coler Hos
pital.
Her closest relatives. Miss
Alice D. Crawford and Pierre
Van Houston, gave a party for
her there. They were assisted
by Fred S. Crawford and Jose
phine McKay.
Some 25 other patients at the
hospital, nurses and aides joined
in the gay party.
Last Chief
Mrs. Pharoah is the widow of
the late Wydach Pharoah. the
last Chief of the Montauk In
dians on Long Island. Her father
was a musician; taught his chil
dren music and directed the
family orchestra, playing for
some of the old and wealthy
families out on Long Island. She
was born in Sag Harbor
Mrs. Pharoah is at the hos
pital suffering with arthritis, but
prior to going there she was
active la the Red Shield Senior
Citizens Club; the Kennedy Cen
ter Senior Citizens club and St.
Phillip’s Club. She loves visitors
and her old friends. Visiting
hours at the hospital are from
1:00 to 3:00 P.M. daily

New Director At
AdoptionAgency
Mrs. Voakine Ysneklan has
been appointed Director of the
Child Adoption Service, It was
announced yesterday by Mrs.
Charles P. Healy, chairman of
the agency’s Board.
The Child Adoption Service,
a section of the State Charities
Aid Association, Is a private non
sectarian agency serving all New
York State. Founded 85 years
ago. it has placed more than
8,500 children in adoptive homes.
Mrs. Yaaeklan is a graduate
of Goucher College and the Col
umbia University School of So
cial Work, and la a member of
the National Association of So
cial Workers. She Joined the
State Charities Aid Association
in 1940 after several years in
public welfare. Mrs. Yanekian
has been a supervisor, the chief
of social service, and assistant
director of the Child Adoption
Service
Mrs. Healy also announced that
