city administration.
Police promptly arrested the
demonstrators and charged each
with violating ordinances
commonly used to discourage
peaceful protests by advocates of
equal rights and justice — block
ing the sidewalk and parading
without a permit. The six — all
Negro women — were released
on $600 bond apiece.

ing signs protesting discrimina
tion were the Miss Stella Har
