Meanwhile in an attempt to

The appointment of the More

“I’m not happy with the Gov

Any person who it an expert
in the field of fashion, such at
the coutourier designers, will ag
ree on about one thing only and
that is that fashion is both a
knowledge of all the ingredients
of fashion and after that it’s
a matter of taste.
To appreciate this, one has
only to look at an Oleg Cassini
design and compare it with a
Hattie Carnegie. Each good >—
each high fashion — and .yet
very, very different! So it Is in
finding the best dressed women

Model versus Purchaser
One only has to look at one
woman with the same dress as
another—for example watch a
model and the way, she wears
a dress;then watch 'the woman
who buys it and the wgy she
looks. It’s a matter, then, of
the way one wears one’s clothes,
too. And yet, every model wears
clothes very differently too.
Choosing the “best dressed’*
always leaves many women in
the list of high contenders for
the title which only a limited
few can wear.
Nonetheless, when one consid
ers that there are perhaps be
tween 6 and 7 million women
within the vicinity of New York
to. choose from, to be a nom

WORDS FOR A WAY OF LIFE . . .
"Singing ‘halleluia’ everywhere does not proove piety"
—Ethiopian Proverb
THE WHITE HOUSE ... As a person who has gone
In and out of the White House since 1940 for more
times than I can count, I am each time always lm
pressedl Last Tuesday was no exception, except that
1 think I had more fun than I have before. My de
light was more in seeing and saying “hello” to so
many people from all over the USA with whom I
have worked over the years.
Among the impressive and Interesting things
about going to the White House is that first of all
is there is no Invitation that tops an “invitation to
the White House.” Sort of like going to Buckingham
Palace in status. The invitations are white and ,gold
with the White House crest and come in two parts —
one to be passed in at the door and the other the in
vitation proper.
You can get the card back if you write for it
but for the “old timers,” if you request it returned,
they just might think you didn’t go though. The
White House is gayer and less formal than I have
ever known it before. I have never been there to an
event where there was no receiving line before, no
matter how short a time it lasted.
One of the most ingratiating things that the
late Mrs. Roosevelt did for several years was to in
vite all the women who worked for the government
to come for Tea each Spring. This was done in shifts,
alphabetically and from three to four days in length
for the thousands of women, with whom she shook
hands in a receiving line. There were countless wom
en who had never dreamed of “going to the White
House” except on a guided tour.
The first year that this was done, I don’t think
I ever saw Washington, D.C. in such a tizzy I Letters
went home, invitations of “home town girls” were
printed on the front pages of the home town papers;
telephone calls about what to wear, what to do; par
ents came to see that “our Susie” had the help she
needed to get ready—Heavens, you’ve just no idea.
And I’ll bet you those three or four days got Presi
dent Roosevelt more votes than any comparable ex
penditure of time than anything else I
There were many persons at the White House
last Tuesday who had never been there before, tool
And I suspect much of the same frenzy and excite
ment went on for many of them, though perhaps in
a more sophisticated way.
Among the folk that I saw that I did not men
tion last week were Judge and Mrs. Myles Paige, Mr.
and Mrs. Charles S. Stone who is leaving soon to go
to Tanganyka in the diplomatic service; the Tylers,
Atty. Andy and Dr. Beth; Dr. Helen Mitchell, Mr.
and Mrs. Lionel Hampton, Marjory Joyner, Katie Q
Whickham, the Lyle Carters, Sjnator and Mrs. James
Watson, Atty, and Mrs. Frank Reeves, Dorothy Atkin
son, Gladys Duncan, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Flagg, Mrs.
Mabel Staupers, Assemblyman Murray LeWinter,
Commissioner Herbert Evan, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wil
liams, Maxine Dargans, Lois Alexander, Mr. and Mrs.
Daniel Day, Elizabeth Oliver, Sterling Tucker, Dr.

NEW YORK DIARY ... Ah, the life one leads in New
York! Friday night, a MUST was stopping by the Car
ver Democratic Club’s annual dance, at the Renais
sance where my long-time-friend J. Raymond Jones
is top man. ’Twas such fun chatting with so many
friends like Edrie Archibald who keeps things hum
ming on the distaff side in her sweet fashion; say
ing “hello” to dear Bob Douglas, the owner and Har
lem's favorite and looking at his priceless collection
of personally autographed photographs of old and
new celebrities.
There were many top officials, led by the Borough
President, Edward Dudley, who combines dignity
with an ease of meeting folks that’s rare; Senator
James Watson with his lovely D’Jaris (a Best Dress

Barbara Watson and Earl Brown receiving congrats
on his new appointment as Deputy Mayor.
Milton Mollen was there—and I nominate him
for any office and hereby appoint me as campaign
manager, so there! Bob Rhone was busy shaking
hands—and he will win next time, too! Ruth Whaley
of the Board of Estimate and one of New York’s
smartest women was introduced and of course I
applauded loudly.----------

Prayer O£ The W eek
Almighty God, we thank Thee
for this new day, affording us
may opportunities to dedicate
and devote our capacities of
mind and heart to the glorious
enterprise of building a nobler
civilization.
Grant that we may be eager
to share in the task of creating
among the members of the hu
man family the spirit of mutual
respect and confidence.
May we be charitable In our
attitude toward the convictions
of others and possess the grace
of living together in the bonds of
friendship and fraternity.
We pray that in all our plans
and labors we may be sustained
by clear and radiant vision
of peace on earth and good will
among men.
Hear us in the name of the
Prince of Peace. Amen.

allowing the sun to set on it as
a Lower Eastside landmark and

Evidence of this was given Sun

blessed a cornerstone at the cha

for a parish house.
The new parish house will ac
commodate the growing activities
of the chapel. It will provide of

staff, apartments for the staff,
religious instruction classrooms,
a modern kitchen and other fac

The basement will rise partly
above the ground level to per
mit the use of windows, ft will
also include two floors in one
of its wings.
