Sources also disclosed that more arrests can ba ex pected in the mushrooming probe of an Income tax refund scheme. Earlier Mr. Morgenthau said the investigation is part of a continuing investigation by the Internal Revenue’s Internal In action Service into a scheme which may eventually involve more than $200,000 in tax frauds. The continuing probe was first disclosed last foil following the arrest of Mrs. Ethel Ivy Neely, wife of a city patrolman, who worked as a supervising tax ex aminer in the Manhattan offices at 484 Lexington Ave. Mrs. Neeley and Grover Cooper, a former worker la tha tax office, were Jailed along with Percy Braaker. owner of Branker's Cocktail Lounge, who allegedly turned over illegal tax refunds to inter nal revesue workers. To appreciate this, one has only to look at an Oleg Cassini design and compare it with a Hattie Carnegie. Each good >— each high fashion — and .yet very, very different! Model versus Purchaser One only has to look at one woman with the same dress as another—for example watch a model and the way, she wears a dress;then watch 'the woman who buys it and the wgy she looks. It’s a matter, then, of the way one wears one’s clothes, too. And yet, every model wears clothes very differently too. Choosing the “best dressed’* always leaves many women in the list of high contenders for the title which only a limited few can wear. "Singing ‘halleluia’ everywhere does not proove piety" —Ethiopian Proverb THE WHITE HOUSE ... As a person who has gone In and out of the White House since 1940 for more times than I can count, I am each time always lm pressedl Last Tuesday was no exception, except that 1 think I had more fun than I have before. My de light was more in seeing and saying “hello” to so many people from all over the USA with whom I have worked over the years. Among the impressive and Interesting things about going to the White House is that first of all is there is no Invitation that tops an “invitation to the White House.” Sort of like going to Buckingham Palace in status. The invitations are white and ,gold with the White House crest and come in two parts — one to be passed in at the door and the other the in vitation proper. You can get the card back if you write for it but for the “old timers,” if you request it returned, they just might think you didn’t go though. The White House is gayer and less formal than I have ever known it before. I have never been there to an event where there was no receiving line before, no matter how short a time it lasted. One of the most ingratiating things that the late Mrs. Roosevelt did for several years was to in vite all the women who worked for the government to come for Tea each Spring. This was done in shifts, alphabetically and from three to four days in length for the thousands of women, with whom she shook hands in a receiving line. There were countless wom en who had never dreamed of “going to the White House” except on a guided tour. The first year that this was done, I don’t think I ever saw Washington, D.C. in such a tizzy I Letters went home, invitations of “home town girls” were printed on the front pages of the home town papers; telephone calls about what to wear, what to do; par ents came to see that “our Susie” had the help she needed to get ready—Heavens, you’ve just no idea. And I’ll bet you those three or four days got Presi dent Roosevelt more votes than any comparable ex penditure of time than anything else I There were many persons at the White House last Tuesday who had never been there before, tool And I suspect much of the same frenzy and excite ment went on for many of them, though perhaps in a more sophisticated way. Among the folk that I saw that I did not men tion last week were Judge and Mrs. Myles Paige, Mr. and Mrs. Charles S. Stone who is leaving soon to go to Tanganyka in the diplomatic service; the Tylers, Atty.
