Brooklyn’s an­ nual extravaganza of youthful talent which benefits the Mac- Donough Street Community Cen­ ter, is well in its way to equal­ ling if not surpassing the memor­ able standards of proceeding I years both in performance and attendance. "We anticipate capacity turn­ out," said Mrs. Norman B. John­ son, general chairman. "The re­ sponse so far has been very en­ couraging. Rockefeller at ground-breaking ceremonies tor a new 390-bed 9tate University Feb. 14, at the Downatate Medi­ cal Center, Brooklyn-. The main unit will be eight stories high, and will provide a center for medical research for Kings County Hospital on the other side of Clarkson Ave. The rest of the 12 affiliated hospitals of the Medical Center will also use the research facilities which will take up a quarter of the new buildings. Construction of the new hos­ pital which will t increase the medical school enrollment from 600 to GOO is expected to open the way for the training of more Negro doctors. But would it af­ fect the special conditions af­ fecting Negro doctors in Kings County? For instance, tt is reliably re­ ported that in Kings County, only one Negro physician can get into the obstretics program at one time. And probably not more than three Negroes have passed through the program since its Inception. Besides physicians, Negro nur­ ses have also suffered under special treatment. There is a case of one who wanted to teach a student pediatrics class. Al­ though fully qualified, she was refused the position which she then obtained in another hospi­ tal. Or the case of another nurse who sought promotion to another post. She was told that a white nurse was better qualified be­ cause she had one year more experience, even though none of the university credits the Negro had. Vacancy But when another vacancy oc­ curred the Negro nurse was told a white nurse had more credits and was thus better qualified. But the white nurse did not have as many years experience as the Negro nurse. Park Workers Wanted * A call for 3,304 seasonal park workers has been Issued by Parks Commissioner Newbold Morris. Employees will earn $1.90 an hour in the categories of park- man, park helper and playground assistant.
