C. - Three teams <r® ln tb* running for first place, and 10 teams are still in the race for tourney berths, as the 18-team CIAA en­ ters the stretch run for 1962-63 basketball honors. The 18th annual Central Inter­ collegiate Athletic Association Basketball Tourtiament will be played Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 28 and March 1 and 2 in Winston-Salem. Scene of play will be the beautiful Coliseum which will seat 8,u00 fans in comfortable reserved seats. Defending Champs Defending tournament cham­ pions are the A.AT. Aggies of Greensboro, N. C. Defending visitation champs are the Win ston-Salem Teachers Rams of Winston-Salem. These two quintets along with the Virginia State Trojans of Petersburg, Va. are vying for first place honors. All three must win their remaining games to stay in the big race. Eight teams will play ln the tournament. In addition to the above three, squads assured of making the meet are the John son C. Smith Golden Bulls of Charlotte, N. C., the Norfolk State Spartans of Norfolk, Va the Maryland State Hawks of Princess Anne, Md. and the North Carolina College Eagles of Durham, N. C. Three quintets are fighting for the remaining berth. They are the Virginia Union Panthers, the Elizabeth City Pirates and the St. Paul’s Pirates. LOS ANGELES — Vetiran righthander Sam Jones, who pitched for Bill Rigney when the latter managed the Giants, re­ ported to the Los Angeles An­ gels training camp at Palm Springs, Calif., which started Feb. 12, it has been announced by General Manager Fred Han­ ey. Jones, a 37-year-old right­ hander is a free agent who was released by the Detroit Tigers at season’s end. Most Assists t Jones had a 2-4 record in 30 Gil Hodges ha* a career total game* for the Tigers last year. Those two wins gave him ex­ actly 100 for his Major League career. He enjoyed the best year of his career under Rigney in 1959, when he had a 21-15 rec­ ord with a league-leading 2.82 ERA. of 1,357 assists. The National League record for most assists by a first baseman is 1,365 by Fred C.
