n Hurting Patterson
By LES MATTHEWS
heavyweight champ Floyd
rson may not get his return
with champion Charles “Son-
*ay" Liston. Veteran fight manag-
- hrs and trainers told The Amster
dam News that Patterson's maa-
* ager, Cos D’Amato alienated pro-
’ moters■. managers and some box
ing commissions when Pattersou
.was champion.
Emile Bruneau, chairman of
the World Boxing Championship
Committee, reportedly said that
any state or country accepting a
return match betwen Patterson
and Liston should be suspended
from the body. He went on to say
“that Patterson should earn a re
turn bout.
The chairman reportedly said
7. that the contract is binding and
J- stipulates that Liston must fight
Patterson or turn over portions
-„of his future purses until Patter
. -eon ia paid a million dollars. He
.further states that Litton has no
• ,w«y of escaping unless Patterson
becomes ill or refuses to fight
-T U Malting Plans
Promoter Tom Bolan, president
; of Championship Sports, Inc.,
i said plans are underway to stage
the return contest in March or
April. No site has been picked,
according to the promoter, but
the fight may be held ^Balti
more or Las Vegas, Nev. Patter
son will resume training after the
holidays.
Champions have always re
quired their opponents to sign a
binding return contract. It haa
been a practice for the challeng
er to place his purse or part of
his purse in escrow until he ful
fils his contract. Several boxers
have been known to turn over a
percentage of their contract to
the tlte holder to get a bout.
It is the general belief in the
boxing circles that Patterson be
came unpopular because of
D’Amato’s actions. When Liston
stopped Patterson in one round,
boxing began writing Patterson’s
obit, but the ex - champ said he
was determined to win back the
crown.
Liston was given a title shot
because Patterson felt he deserv
ed one, although D’Amato was
against the bout and said so pub
licly. Patterson felt that Liston
was not given a fair chance and
gave him a crack at the crown.
