Woods, once owner of two Harlem hotels and former operator of the Theresa Hotel, faces a pos­ sible stiff jail term when he comes up for sentencing in Criminal Court on March 20 on his recent conviction on petit larceny charges. Last Rites For Helen Armstrong Mrs. Helen S. Mrs. Williams, 85 years old, was the last surviving charter member of St Paul’s, described as the first AME church west of the Mississippi. She was the wid­ ow of the late Rev. .Noah W. Williams, high churchman of the St. Louis AME church. Mrs. Williams’ survivors, In addition to the Brooklynites, In­ clude eight nieces and nephews In Missouri, Illinois and Kansas. When Ambassador L a z a r e Mpakaniye of Ruanda called at the White House to present his credentials this week, Caroline walked into her father’s office and curtsied to the African dip­ lomat. One of the diplomat’s aides said Mpakaniye was very de­ lighted when Caroline appeared, accompanied by a playmate and a German shepherd named Clip­ per. Vagner’s Committee on Job Advancement submitted (his week to Mayor Wagner its preliminary findings of a study into the portrayal in television shows, TV commercials and other mass media advertis­ ing of Negroes, Puerto Ricans and members of other minority groups as part of the everyday life of America The Committee, headed by The- odore W. Kheel and James J. McFadden, reported that iti study to date confirm* it* origi­ nal observation that a general absence of such portrayal in na­ tional advertising ha* resulted in a distorted image of the United State*. The Committee reported also that it had found encouraging signs that the situation can be improved. An analysis of replies to a letter sent on December 6 by Mr. Kheel and Acting Labor Commissioner McFadden to 106 of the nation’s major industrial, business and advertising com­ panies with headquarter* in New York City showed widespread support in principle for the Com­ mittee’s goal of Integrating the minority groups into the adver­ tising image of America at work, at play and as consumers. Several executive* of large con­ cern* replied that they would restud’ their positions and seek to remedy the situation. The report cited a* an example of “excellent cooperation" the action of a major air line which reviewed and discussed the Com­ mittee’s suggestions uud then ap proved an advertising layout in which Negro figures are readily identifiable. The Committee call­ ed thio "especially significant ' since its own survey of all issue* of four leading national maga­ zine* of general circulation had showed only two Instance* dur­ ing 1962 of use of Negro models in major advertisements.
