< What has happened to SPACE? Space is, or
was, the group of actors who banded together after
the Congressional hearings last October to form a
working committee. In fact the group included not
only actors, but models, agents, radio advertising
men and even a young lawer. Headed by Chuck
Oordone, who was selected as tern-
porary chairman, it included such
people as Hilda Simms, Dorothea
F,
p,; /' Towles, Ernestine McClendon, Ophelia
| De Vore, Hugh Hurd and many others.
Mainly their reason for banding
was to keep the heat on and not to
allow whatever inroads they * had
made upon the conscience of the
theatrical producers fade into obli
vion. But we are afraid that this is
exactly what has happened.

Very Unfortunate
This is unfortunate. It always happens with us.
We make big gains, make big plans and then allow
everything to die away after the glamour and the
spotlight of the press have worn off.

At the outset, Odell Clark of the Powell Office,
not only encouraged the participants to keep their
, on ABC- ranks closed, but also gave them the freedom to
meet in the offices so that they could have a central
the convenin8 place. He also offered to help with any
x critical advice they might need. The result of all of this
m hiatory help seems such a terrible waste because Space has

Common Cause
First of all the idea of people with common
cause being in close contact is necessary and a
mbe a pattern followed everywhere for their mutual

<3 p m.. Second, the fact that they are able to band

Thirdly, the reason for asking them to band

Two Churches Face Merger
t
The sweeping tide of increas
ing Negro population and chang
ing neighbors will make It nec
essary for two churches with
former lily • white congregations
to merge Into one. The churches
Involved are the Hanson Place
Baptist Church. 88 Hanson Place
and Emmanuel Baptist, 279 La
fayette Avenue. Both those neigh
borhoods were once all white,
ibut today the change in the
neighborhoods is reflected in the
congregations of the churches—
more than fifty per cent Negro.
Merging formalities are still In
the works but both ministers are
I of the opinion that the merging
[is Inevitable.
’ Rev. Theodore E. Miller of
Emmanuel said: “We have ap
pointed a committee composed of
I members from both churches to
look into the merging and they
have had one meeting. At the
annual meeting at the end of
this month we will probably come
to a decision.”
Rev. Norman F. Blosat of the
Hanson Place Church blamed
money problems as one of the
factors for the merger, as well
as dwindling attendance and a
lack of lay readers (Sunday
School teachers). He said:

ship of. my church now has
lower Income bracket than the
people who formerly attended
here. We have no endowment,
but fortunately Emmanuel has
and that has helped them to
stayiafloat.”
Rev. ^Blosat said his church
was now about sixty per cent
Negro. An Imposing edifice 108
years old, the Hanson Place
church seats 900 and, in its hey
day boasted 1,000 members. To
day its membership is not over
240, with attendances of about
100 on Sunday. Emmanuel has
350 members.
In both churches all facilities
as well as the deacon boards
and the boards of trustees are
integrated. The handwriting on
the wall Indicates, however, that
in time, with the moving of the
white population, both these
churches would become solidly
Negro.
The proposed plan is for Han

stronger institution. Rev. Blosat
stated that there were plans to

not sure, at this time whether
he would %e in a position

had other irons in the fire.
