8 • THE AMSTERDAM NEWS, Sat., March 30, 1963 The Lark Is The New Cigarette On Market « Liggett & Meyers Tobac- new cigarette is not only a sci- jmpany announced this week entlfically valid and meanaigful improvement, but a real break through, in the selective filtra tion of cigarette smoke, that it will begin marketing im mediately a new cigarette named LARK, which has a new and unique three-piece filter named after one of its inventors, Dr. C. H. Keith,,-of. the..Company’s Research Center. The Keith Fil ter on Lark is a three-piece fil ter consisting of two outer fil ters of cellulose acetate and a unique inner filter of activated charcoal granules, a substance used by science to purify air. Commenting on the new Lark, Liggett & Meyers President Zach Toms stated: “We believe this "The charcoal granules in the Keith Filter are not only acti vated bat also specially fortified by a pew process to increase their power to absorb small quanti ties of various irritating gases that are present in cigarette smoke. A patent for this new material has been applied for. The presence of these gases in cigartte smoke has been rec ognized for some time, and they have been referred to In medical reports as 'volatile irritants.’ “The specially treated charcoal in the Keith Filter selectively de creases the amount of these gas es to a level far below that pres ent in the smoke of any other available cigarette. At the same time, the two cellulose acetate parts of the Keith Filter provide the same type of filtration as good conventional filters. “The Keith Filter is a tech nological development which puts into practice important knowledge obtained from a broad ly based biological research pro gram carried on in the Life Sciences Division of Arthur D. Little Inc. in Cambridge, Mas sachusetts. In this program. which has been supported by Liggett A Myers for the past nine years, the actions of these volatile irritants in filtered and non-filtered cigarette smoke have been studied on mammalian ell ia. “The cilia are the minute hair- like structures which beat rhyth mically and remove foreign mat erial from the respiratory pas sageways in the lung. These studies, which will be submit ted for publication to appropriate professional journals, indicate that the new Keith Filter pro tects the cilia far beyond any available cigarette. These lab oratory findings will, in due course, be evaluated by the med ical profession in terms of their probable benefit to man. “Meanwhile, what advantages will the smoker find in the new Lark as a result of this selec tive removal of irritants from the smoke! First and foremost, he will find a rich-tasting flavor, fully satisfying to his taste, and far superior to the rather flat and bland taste of many filter brands. Second, and equally im portant, he will notice a remark able smoothness to the taste of the smoke. The smoothness of a Lark is a self-demonstrating pro perty of the cigarette which we believe the smoker will recog nize and appreciate immediate ly.” FRIDAY AT 10 A.M. Disaster Relief ly and boldly met, have made Rev. Walter S. Pinn pastor of one of Long Island’s fastest grow ing churches, Calvary Baptist, at 110-10 New York Blvd., Jam aica. The first, which led him into the ministry was the birth of his son, Walter Roy In 1931. “We feund out early that he had hemo philia”, Rev. Pinn said. It was the illness that ended his life in January this year. Sublimation Rev. Pinn’s reaction to the prospect of his son going through life with this abnormal condition wa£ one of sublimation. Brought up by a p&us mother and mar ried to the daughter of a minister, he naturally pondered the issues of life and death, the reason for being. So he stepped out from a promising business career with General Motors which he had joined as a bookkeeper after ma joring in business administration at Columbia University. He stu died at the National Bible In stitute, now Shelton College, and worked at the post office at night. In 1935 he was ordained at Union Baptist Church, Manhat tan, by its pastor and his father- in-law, the late Rev. George H Simms. After two years as his assistant, Rev. Pinn held the same position at Metropolitan Baptist Church, Manhattan. The Gauntlet While serving there, the gaunt let was for the second time cast before him, when in 1946, he was asked to pastor the 15-year-old Calvary Baptist Church. It was then two blocks away from the present site in a one-story frame building. Besides its uninviting physical appearance, it had acquired a reputation that did not commend it. This bore some relation to the fact that it had 7 pastors in the fifteen years. Rev. Pinn demurred at the in vitation but agreed to preach there the following Sunday. He went with his two children, Walter Jr. and Louise. Returning to Manhattan, the kids laughed at the idea of an invitation to the pastorate of Calvary. But, Rev. Pinn stated: “I saw the challenge and opportunity, so I told them I would go.” And he did. No Bank Account ne found a church with only 71 members, no bank account and a history of lack of confidence between congregation and m'n- ister. In 1949 he broke ground for the present church with a seating capacity of 1,000 and an active membership of 2,500. His use of Negro architects for the construction is significant. “They are among the best any where,” he said. And he hinted at the possibility of financing the expansion through Negro in stitutions. Organized In 1957 he had organized a Federal Credit Union within the I Church with assets now over | 855,000. “My members have no credit problem,” he stated. “They! have been loaned over $120,000 by the Union.” Outside the church he organ ized Allied Federa’ Savings and Loan Association of which he is vice-president. “It has opened up the area”, Rev. Pinn asserted. “Banks now beg to lend to Ne groes because of the competition.’ There is a Citizens Committee organized by the church, but in terracial and inter-denomination al. It meets regularly at Calvary to discuss problems of commun ity interest. The church, which had seven pastors in its first 15 years, has had Rev. Pinn as minister since he went there 17 years ago. That reflects the degree of con fidence he has inspired in his congregation. Church Funds His systematic accounting of church funds, something not done before his days, has a great deal to do with this confidence. As the church grew in numbership, so did the number of its organ izations and activities. His first marriage in 1930 to Miss Edith Simms ended in a divorce. He married again to his present wife, Miss Peggy Al drich, a City College graduate and former C.B.S. executive sec retary. She is supervisor of the Baptist Youth Fellowship o< the church. They live in a 9-room $40,000 parsonage in Springfield Gard ens, not very far from Astoria where Rev. Pinn was born in 1907. In the Americas that history is studded with the brilliant achievements of black men even in spite of handicaps. “Let us launch a nation-wide pilgrimage for pride in the rich, glorious Afro-American heritage,” Rev. I'M ; In. • • In marrying protest with pro duction, Rev. Lawrence sought to harmonize the roles of two wings of Negro leadership. One he said, saw salvation in “the protest of economic sanctions or sit-ins or voluntary imprison ment,” while the other held pro duction alone was the panacea Both elements were necessary, said the president' of the newly formed Afro-American Heritage Foundation. But to them must be added “the priceless ingred ient—pride.” This was the chal lenge to the church today, he asserted, “to grant Negro youth its heritage.” Young Boy “Let us say to the young boy, to the young girl: ‘You have a heritage. You are heir to the legacy of a nnhi<? race. On the pages of American and world history, black people, your fore bears, your ancestors have writ ten gloriously.” The record of this glorious his tory began, he said, when black men invented the alphabet on the banks of the Nile.
