Gregory ',ot Washington, D.C. was reveal *«d in • letter sent last Friday >' to Commissioner Philip N. Brown- * atein of the Federal Housing Adminstration. The letter noted that Mr. Gregory and his at torney, Mrs. Constance Baker d Motley, met with Mr. Adolphus Sj^rotho, general counsel of the FHA and Oliver Hill, assistant to Commissioner Brownstein, in ••g conference on Wednesday. Mrs. Motley is associate counsel of ‘“the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund. In Bowie, Md. 7 Mr. Gregory submitted his complaint to the FHA on Dec ember 17, 1962, alleging that Levitt & Sons refused to sell him a house in their Belaire develop ment at Bowie, Md. solely be cause of his race. The FHA ’found that his complaint was justified and fell within the pur view of Section 102 of the Presi dent’s housing order of Novemb er 20. Mr. Gregory was notified by Commissioner Brownstein early this year that after two conferen ces with Mr. Levitt he had been unsuccessful in getting him to abandon his “all-white" policy. The letter stated there was “noth ing further" the FHA could do. Mr. Gregory replied on March 26 that he was not satisfied with this answer. He retained Mrs. Motley and requested the meet ing with FHA officials which was t held last week. • Mr. Gregory moved from De troit in September 1961 to work • in the executive Office of the President for the Bureau of the Budget.
