r t; -Jackie (Continued from Page One) jet at 7:20 p.m. 'Birmingham time, and after posing at the airport under a, aeon sign, which said “We re Glad to Have You In Birmingham", the party was taken by police escort to two of the wildest civil rights rallies this reporter has ever seen. The first rally was held at the Fifth Street Baptist Church, and when Robinson and Patterson entered 2,000 persons were inside singing ’’Freedom'’, a soul stir ring religious chant composed especially for the Birmingham Movement. The appearance of Robinson and Patterson set off pandem onium. Jackie7~vrtrer is still walking with a cane from a knee opera tion, and Patterson, whose right hand is heavily bandaged from a training camp injury, were literally swept off of their feet by the surging chanting crowd and almost crushed by people, young and old, who pressed for wardmerely to touch them or tifeirclothing. Both men rose to the occasion. Hits Kennedy Robinson ripped President Ken nedy for failing to send trooD9 into Birmingham instead of sta tioning them 75 miles away. Speaking to the non-violent rally, Jackie made It plain that he is not exactly a non-violent advocate. He castigated State Police and Police Commissioner “Bull'1 Connor, much to the de light of the cheering crowd. Patterson who was more res trained, thanked the Negroes of Birmingham for the fight that they are waging for a “better America”. Patterson, who brought his en tire staff here with him ’ given a wild ovation when he in troduced his trainer, his assist ant trainer, his lawyer and nis chaueffer. He said his wife had wanted to come but that after having been crushed by the crowd he was glad he had not brought her. After the rally quickly raised $500, to which each member of the New York party contributed at least $5.00, the group then moved to the Pilgrim Baptist Church, where the Rev. James Bevels was conducting a youth rally. The youngsters, about 2,000 school kids, outdid their parents in their reception of the two cele brities. They nearly tore the rafters off the church when Patterson in troduced hie young chauffeur, who was nattily and immaculate ly attired in the very latest con tinental style. This rally was captured by the Rev. William Epps of Staten Island, New York, who9e congregation had collected money to send him here. Upon arrival at the airport, the group was met by the Rev. Wyatt Tee Walker, D. King's top lieu tenant, who immediately warned that hoodlums bad made threat ening telephone calls that they would "get Robinson and Pat terson when they arrived”. On the long trek out of the air port, Rev. Walker called Patter son's and Robinson’9 attention to aibout 25 Negro custodial em ployees of the airport, who were lined up on each side of the air port corridor leaning on long handled brooms. It was later learned that this group had been formed into a broom brigade, with instructions to use their broom handles to take care of any violence that might erupt. Rev. Martin Luther King, Ralph D. Abernathy and all the other top leaders were on hand to greet Robinson and Patterson. To Motel Following the meetings, the en tire party of New Yorkers, both white and colored, were taken to the A.C. Gaston Motel and bedded down after first being shown the corner of the motel which was destroyed by a bomb early Sunday morning. Although the New Yorkers were at first a little uneasy as to what might happen when they went to sleep, the hardy Birmingham Ne groes tried to calm them by stat ing that “Don’t worry about any bombs here — lightning never strikes the same place twice. No one here seems to worry about dogs, bombs, water hoses or state troopers, only one word is on their lips — "Freedom". Out Of Hospital Early Tuesday morning, the embattled Rev. Fred L. Shuttles- worth was released from the hos pital and immediately returned to the bombed-out Gaston Motel Rev. Martin King and Rev. Wyatt Walker flew off to Cleveland and Rev. King's brother, made ready to fly back to New York with Jackie and Floyd for a rally on Seventh Avenue. Rev. Walker's wife, who was smashed in the face with an air rifle butt Sunday night by a state trooper, was in an Atlanta hosp ital. In the face of aU this chaos, city police reported the situation is “calm”. < A I 42 • N T. AMSTERDAM NEWS. Sat., May 18. 1963 CLASSIFIED ADVERTISEMENTS Grocery and Delicatessen business for sale. Raymond Jones — backed by the powerful weight of Mayor Wagner and Democratic County leader Ed Costikyan— took his seat in the New .York City Council Tusday filling a vacancy caused on Feb. 1 when Herbert Evans was appointed to the Housing and Redevelopment , holds the title of Mayor Wagner s political coordinator, marks the first time he has sought public elective office. It gave rise t reports of a wide-open commun ity fight for district leaderships in Harlem and for the remaining two-years in the Council post. Reform Democrats, whom Jones has opposed in the past, are expected to continue to support Timothy Taylor or Attorney Ol iver Sutton for the Council seat, while there were some reports that Dickens and Simmonetti may still seek to run a Council candidate in the primary. And some predicted possible oppos ition for Jones’ district leader ship. Already reformers have an nounced a candidate to oppose the incumbents for district lead erships when primary petitions Board. The 63-year-old Jones, who was elected to fill the $10,000-a-year post until the end of the year, is expected to have bitter oppo sition in seeking the remaining two-year term in the Sept. 5 primary as the three Harlem leaders who had opposed Jones for the temporary post, had no comment following his selection. The three, Franz Leichter, 7th A.D., reformer; Assemblyman Lloyd Dickens of the 11th A.D., and Angelo Simmonetti, of the 13th A.D., West, all declined to comment on the possibility of a primary fight. Jones’ unanimous election by the Council Tuesday was made possible after Democratic County Leader Ed Costikyan, unable to get the four leaders in the 21st C.D., to agree on a single choice, sent a letter to Council President Eric Treulich Monday announc ing that Jones was his personal choice for election to the tem porary vacancy. The selection of Jones, who —Teacher (Continued from Page One) the Board of Examiners racially discriminated against her and graded her far below passing on exams which she Is highly cap able of passing without the least effort.” “We are backing her, taking het case and our lawyers will take it to the New York State Court of Appeals. And if ne sary. we will take it all the way to the United States Supreme Court.” His statements followed closely on the heels of State Educa tion Commissioner James E. Al len’s dismissal of an appeal Mrs. Jones made to him. In her petition, 6he and her lawyer, Attorney Paul B. Zuber, asked Allen to have her exam papers re-evaluated by judges outside of New York City. Friday, May M), Commissioner .Allen informed Mrs. Jones that he had turned down her appeal I a oa Her lawyers have 30 days in which to file an' appeal of his decision. Her appeal is being readied Her Charges In her petition to Allen, Mrs Jones also charged the Board of Examiners with racial bias, un fair administration of its exams, unfair judging, unfair grading of exams and leaking examination answers to selected teachers be fore exams are given. She pointed out that many Whites who took exams along with her, but could not, and still do not, match her academic achievements or years of teach ing experiences, have long ago been elevated to supervisory po sitions by the Board of Examin ers. There is no Negro principal among the 44,000 teachers in the New York City public school system. Currently the Board of Exam iners is under a "hush hush” investigation because of charges that on its recent examination for assistant principal, questions and answers were known long before the exam was given by many of the 500 teachers who sat for the test. It helps keep the cost of electricity down. For ex ample, at times upstate New York will have a surplus of power we can buy at a favorable price.
