DVD. — Many race fans are of the opinion that the Indianapolis “500" has be came a "helmet dash" In recent years, with all of the outstanding contenders battling for the lead from the instant the green Gag drops for the "flying start.” This is true to some extent, because the $30,000 Lap Prize Fund — at $150 for each leading lap — provides a tremendous amount of incentive for the par ticipants. But the casta reward for being at the head of the pack at the completion of the final lap is what really counts; and that’s the principal thing I keep in mind when planning race day strategy. The driver who extends himself or his equipment to the absolute limit early in the race often finds himself qn the sidelines, with nothing to do but watch his rivals fight it out on the track during the late stages; Flexible Plans My own plans for May 30 are rather simple, but flexible. When the Chrysler 300 pace car swerves into the pit area, giving us a dear track for the 500 miles ahead, I’ll be mighty happy if I can grab the lead and hold it without going "all out" immedi ately. But I’ll be surprised if things happen that way, because a few of the "hot dogs’’ will be extremely eager to take com mand at once. The most important Job I've set for myself, prior to my first pit stop, is to keep the leader of the race in sight constantly on the long straightaways; and that means I plan to stay within 5 or 6 seconds of the No. 1 spot. After getting new tires and a full fuel tank at approximately 125 or 130 miles, there still will be ample time to begin dosing the gap by moving up one position at a time. Four stops There’s a definite psychological advantage to be gained by doing this convincingly, because it die- courages an immediate counter challenge, but It also is necessary to guard against excessive tire wear which might cz/use an extra pit stop. This could be the year when some of the front-runners may find it necessary to make four 6tops for tires, instead of the usual three; and that would be a tremendous penalty to pay for changing to the front too soon. In 1959, I held the lead after $2,500 Gulf Grqnts To Two Educators Dr. Tilman C. Cothran of At lanta University and Dr. John T. Blue of Virgina State College-Nor folk Division, have been awarded faculty salary supplementation grants by the Gulf Oil Corpora tion to conduct a two-month sur vey of the Negro market this summer. and editor of Phylon, the Univer sity’s review of race and culture. He was graduated in 1939 from Agricultural, Mechanical & Nor mal College at Pine Bluff, and received an M.A. degree from the University of Indiana in 1942. The University of Chicago granted him a doctoral degree in 1949. The $2,500 grants were given to both educators as part of Gulf comprehensive Aid to Ed ucation program. Dr. Cothran, a native of Arkan sas, is chairman of the sociology department at Atlanta University Dr. Blue, a native of Oklahoma, is director of the Social Science Research Laboratory of Virginia State College’s Norfolk Division as well as chairman of theschool’s sociology department and divi sion of social sciences taking it on the 5th lap. Last year my first leading lap was the 126th, when Parnelli Jones began to experience brake trouble. That is one thing about automobile racing that everyone should re member. You don't have to be lucky to win the “500,’’but the least bit of luck can keep you out of Victory Lane. With the help of my fine pit crew, that's where I hope to be about 2:30 p.m. on May 30. If I arrive on schedule, I will have set a new race record. Last year it was 2:35 when I made that fin al left turn at the end of the main straightaway. Previous Gulf Grants Earlier this year, Gulf present ed more than $21,000 in capital and direct grants to 39 Negro colleges and universities located in 13 states under other sections of the Company’s Aid to Educa tion program. In 1961, H. Naylor Fitzhugh of Howard University, who was awarded a faculty salary supple mentation grant, studied Gulf ser vice station rental policies. Gulf’s Aid to Education pro gram also comprises Gulf merit scholarships to children of em ployees and annuitants; employee giftmatching to independent non tax supported colleges; and grad uate fellowships.
