James Rooks Jr , 15-year-old
Boys High School sophomore ac
cused of shoving a 9-year-otd
girl to her death last December
from the roof of the 14-story
Faragut Houses, underwent his
second sanity hearing this week
in Brooklyn Supreme Court.
Rooks, of 234 Sands St., alleg
edly attacked Lourdes Bass,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carol
Bass, 190 York St., on the roof
of the house where she lived
and then shoved her to her death.
An earlier examination by doc
tors at Kings County Hospital
resulted in an inconclusive find
ing and young Rook's lawyer ask
ed for the second test at Bellevue
Hospital.

Comedian Dick Gregory, cur

headline the talent - filled jazz
variety show at Carnegie Hall in
Manhattan on the evening of
June 9 to provide instructors for
Negro school childrn in Prince
Edward County, Virginia.

All Stars and the Art Farmer
Quartet, which features Jim Hall
Proceeds from the jazz - varie
ty show will help provide trans
portation, room and board for
more than 40 volunteer students
of Queens College who plan to
spend their summer living with
Negro families in this southern
community and giving academic
and recreational instruction to
the locked out school children.
The student »• teachers are cur
rently in training under the
supervision of professional teach
ers and professors from Queens
College. They are officially org
anized into the “Virginia - Ja
maica Student Help Project” and
now spend their evenings and
weekends tutorihg school chil
dren in the Jamaica area.
Because HenryFord thought la
bor had a right to higher wages,
better hours and a share of pro
fits, the auto pioneer in 1914
announced distribution of a $10
million bonus to his employes
and a minimum wage of $5 for
an 8-hour day. The Centennial of
his birth is being marked in 1963.

Youths Held In Homicide
Four Brooklyn youths were
held this week on a charge of
homicide for fatally beating a
neighbor who complained about
their noise during a drinking ses
sion, last May 25.
Held for hearing on June 11
were David Martin, 20, 4J Albany
Ave., Richard Criswell, 18, 45 Al
bany Ave., Alphonso Kitt, 15, 435
Herkimer St., and James Perk
ins, 15, 395 Herkimer St. A fifth
youth whose name was withheld
because of his age, was charged
with juvenile delinquency.
Police said the boys were drink
lng at 40 Albany Avenue, In an
empty apartment and making a
lot of noise to which Curtis Mea
dows, in an adjoining apartment,
objected. They attacked Mead
ows, said police, stomped him
and threw him down a Hight of
stair*. Meadows died Thursday
in Kings County Hospital. The
arrests were made last Friday
night.
