Screvane Gets "Hot Potato"
Acting IMayor Paul Screvane
»«i tarred with a poliUcnliy^ot
potato late Wednesday as the
Commission on Human Highta
which already is under fire for a
biased request by one of its aides
forwarded to City Hall its find
ings In the probe of Deputy Com
merce Commissioner Anne M.
Kelly in which she adnuts to
making a racial request.
The Amsterdam News learned
from highly authoritative sourc
es that the admission of asking
for a “white secretary” is con
tained In the confidential investi
gative report by OCHR sent to
City Hail late Wednesday.
At City Hall spokesmen said
there was no Immediate com
ment on the report, but earlier
Acting Mayor Screvane Indicated
that be would act promptly with
regard to Miss Kelly, a veteran
df more than 30 years in dty
government, who was Mayor
Robert Wagner's personal secre
tary for over 13 years.
The pditically4tot racial ..
tion was exclusively revealed In
the Amsterdam News last week,
and despite/ bitter protests by
Commerce Commissioner Louis
Broido, that the charges were
“a tissue of lies,’’ the investiga
tive findings are expected to
touch off a new flury of com
ments In government circles.
The investigative report on
Comm. Kelly came as the Com
mission on Human Rights itself
was caught in a racial squeeze
as the administrator of the of
fice, John F. Bottone, a 25-
yvar career employee with
the city, was revealed to have
sought to hire a white secretary
through the State Employment
Agency.
Madison S. Johes, OCHR exec
utive director, said that the in
formation on Bottone had been
sent to him on May 11, and he
had “administered him and re
leased him of making any kind
of personal requests.” CCKR,
however, did not make any In
vestigation In the case.
f 1
Just what action the Mayor's
office wtH take in either case was
not immediately revealed, but
most officials indicated that both
were clear violations of the city
and state’s anti-bias lews. In
Bottone case, however, it was
reported that he had backed
down on his request after ques
tioning by the state agency.
