C. which discriminates against Ne­ groes because of color is not a member of Ms chain. Last month in reporting tfle demonstration around the Har­ vey’s Restaurant in Durham, North Carolina, James L. Hicks of the Amsterdam News refer­ red to Harvey’s Restaurant there, as a member of the national chain of Harvey's”. In making it clear that Fred Harvey is not associated with Harvey's Res­ taurant in Durham, Leslie Scott, President of Fred Harvey said: ‘‘It has been a matter of com­ pany policy for many years to extend the hospitality of our hotels and restaurants to every­ one on the same basis regardless of race or color. We presently operate a wide variety of food services ranging from stand-up snack bars to luxury dining rooms across the country from Cleve­ land to Los Angeles. I can per­ sonally guarantee that the situ­ ation you have described could not occur at a Fred Harvey restaurant.” Wrote paper Mr. Scott wrote to the Amster­ dam News after reading Hicks'i story. NAMD Elects Avery WASHINGTON — The Nation­ al Association of Market Devel­ opers wound up their 10th annu­ al convention here recently with a resolution asking the President of the United States to direct U.S. businessmen to probe more deep­ ly into the causes of Negro unem­ ployment with the aim of finding solutions. The President held such a conference on Jue 4. The NAMD statement com­ mended the President for his in­ terest and concern with equal op­ portunist for the Negro citizen. CORE Meets Next Week Direct action campaigns in the New York City area and in Louisiana this summer will be unveiled at the Congress on Racial Equality'* (COKE) 21st national convention next weekend. June 27-30, in Day- ton, Ohio. James Fanner, CORE nat­ ional director, will keynote the opening sessions, to which some 60 CORE groups from 22 states are sending repre­ sentatives. Special workshops on methods to combat discrim­ ination in employment, police brutality. CORE philosophy and methods of non-violent direct action will also be dis­ cussed daring the four-day ses­ sions. Among speakers expected to address the convention are Wiley Branton, director of the Voter Education Project, and representatives of some 25 civ­ ic and human rights groups.
