May b Mrs. McCaffree explained th the Council planned to have i overall “Board of Advisors .which would be made up of I heads of many national orga izations such as youth, religio and women’s groups. She believed that this mig include such groups as the Ni iocal Council oS^Ncgro Worn and others. When asked if ai_^ would be on the top body—which is the Women’s Advisory Coun­ cil. she stated that they “have already been chosen.’’ Asked who would make the choice of the women to serve on the “Board of Advisors’’, she stated that it would be the “ex­ ecutive committee”, the only name of which she gave was Mrs. Dorothy Lewis. Ne meeting until Fall When asked when this commit tee would meet to determine which Negro women might be asked to serve on the “advisory” group, she stated that it would not be before the Fall, since there would be no meeting until then. Mrs. McCaffree indicated that they were very busy seeking sponsors “to finance the lounge, furniture, professional help and maintenance." The functions of the Women’s Advisory Council are described as to “receive, advise, entertain and aid prominent women and women’s groups at the Fair.” The Council will be assisted by small staff, which will direct arge group of volunteers, serv­ ing as hostesses, on a scheduled basis.” NCNWBuys Apartment Building t.... __4 The ground breaking ceremoa tea for Bethune House, a 41 apartment building at 401 Chaplin \ S.E. in Washington D.C were held there last week with Mrs. Daisy Lampkin officiating. At the ceremony four women were cited with plaques present­ ed to them by Mita Althea Gib­ son. Honored were Mrs. Pltricia R. Harris, associate dean of stu­ dents at Howard University and LaBonnie Bianchi, an engineer with the Glen Martin Company. Also Goldie Battle, Howard Un­ iversity senior who has been sel­ ected as an appointee with tbe Atomic Energy Ctnnmiision and Jean Drew Lightfoot of the staff' of the U. S. Department of State. Those Guardsmen did tt again last week! This time it was the Connecticut group, headed by the debonair Dr. Joe Carwin, who belongs to brainy, beautiful Dr. Joyce. Some 350 folk from all over enjoyed golf, ping pong, shuffleboard, swimming, boating, cards, fishing, volley ball, tennis, basketball (between the coronary five the high pressure globe trotters); smorgasbord, a cook out, champagne, two bands and a perpetual bar! Among the celebrants wen Mary Lopes, who won the golf tournament for ladies and Ronald Brown, who won for the men (no­ body’s telling what the scores were); the Kenneth Williams (Dr.); the Phil Beaches (Dr.); the Tommy Days (Dr.); the Bill Browns; the John Procopes; the James Browns; the William Pleasantses (Dr.); the Chester Redheads (Dr.); the Buddy Cowans (Dr.); Frank Bizelle; the Vaughn Masons (Dr.) Frank Coreia; the Gns Grangers (Dr. and Dr.); the Dunbar McLaurins and scads more. All loved the Banner Lodge in Moodus, Conn., where the brisk .doings took place and Joe Carwin is the new national prexy, too. Ah, live, live, live! ... PRIDE AND JOY DEPARTMENT . . . Cynthia Sissle p^ked up a sheepskin at Howard U. last week and got a note from Mayor Robert F. Wagner who put a PS on it to say “my regards to your father” and letters from J. Edgar Hoover and Senator Jacob Javits. Naturally mama, who is designer Ethel Sissle and papa who is top music man Noble, are happy . . . Wanza Williamson, the doll, following in mama’s brilliant footsteps~by going to Dalton School and winding up being president, no less, of the whole student govern­ ment* Mama is a BS and MS from Radcliffe. Daddy William beams with pride over his ladies . . . Africa Hays, daughter of the immortal Roland, is a future artist, too. She is closing another year as soprano soloist with the North Carolina College at Durham choir . . . Howie Kinckle Dammond of Great Neck, got the coveted bachelors degree from Brandeis last week and was admitted to both the University of Wisconsin and to Yale U. He chose Yale and will study history to riaar up some of the myths about color. They planned to take the Aug. ll-to-17 convention to the new New York Hilton when the NAACP started picketing the Hilton chain, the Deltas then switched to the Americana. The Hilton group saw some $100,000. worth ci business going out the window and the fight was on—as it seems as how there’s no black and money—it’s all green . . . Leave All Gone Col.
