Power Memorial Academy's 15-
year-old basketball star who is
seven feet tall and weighs 220-
pounda, is the most sought after
schoolboy in the United States.
Among the school’s offering him
scholarships are Michigan State,
Manhattan College, Oklahoma
and Tennessee State.
Power's coach, Jack Donohue
said: “Alcindor, who has 89 aca
demic average, is taking his pub
licity in stride. ‘El Cid* as he
is called by his teammates, is
a good all around man oh the
court. He shoots well, has a var-
lty of shots and is also a good
defensive player”.
“Although he is not a scorer
like Wilt Chamberlain who av
erages 474 points a game”, Don
ohue continued, “be has the po
tentials. With a little more ex
perience ‘El Cid’ should devel-
ope into a top play maker and
scorer”.
The only child of a B-3% foot

dinand, Sr. and a six-foot moth
er, ‘El Cid’ lives with his par
ents on 204th S7~1b Manhattan
and attends St. Jades Catholic
Church. He also attended the
church’s grammer school before
entering Power Memorial, an all
boys school which is operated by
the Christian Brothers of Ire
land.
Alclndor wears a 16D shoe
which is made to order and
sleeps in a custom made 7-6
bed. He has 39-ineh arms and
will study engineering In college.
His teammates, including Joe
Straining, Phil Morcia, O a c a r
Sanches, captain; George Borba-
xat, Bob Erickson, Jack Bett-
ridge, Dan Nee, Art Kenny and
Jim Mannari, all say 'El Cid’ is
easy to get along with and has
not developed a superiority com
