I must say that I am a little disturbed by the things that were said in that article, by the tone that was registered in the reader’s ear, of injustice done to the Negro and by the prejudice displayed by the writer of that article. Negro Unity Day Sir: The President of our coun try says that be cannot withhold money from Mississippi. We, the Negro people have the power to withhold money. across the face of the United States. In support of our beliefs, as a show of strength and unity, I propose that we set aside a Ne gro National Unity Day. A day of sacrifice on which we will not purchase one single item, except a newspaper, or spend one quar ter except for transportation to and front work. The economy of each and cv ery state and of the country would be shaken and affected The purchasing of the Negro is immense and even one day of nationwide abstinence from pur chasing would be telling We would not buy a quart u milk, a package of cigarettes, not even the smallest or most ne cessary Item. AM Negro owned stores would be closed, all would not be partonized by us for the one day. We can do it. There are enough newspapers, churches, radio statons, unions, and other media of communica tion to advise our people of the chosen day and the steps to be taken. I find no fault in the action of the principal, nor do I find fault with the action of the higher au thority, Dr. Schapp, who rein stated the harassed teacher, find fault with you for sloppy reporting in a case that involves the livelihood of a human being First, J.HH. 139 la not a school filled with little angels as you would have the public believe. There are children in that schoo who can make life hell for teacher. There are children, and I use the word children with some after-thought, there are children in that school who wouk think nothing of physically at tacking a teacher, or if not re sorting to that, berating him with such filth from the mouto that be would have to keep a super human control on his temper am nerves to keep from exploding The case may have been one where the teacher actually did insult a student without cause The teacher may have been an evil sort who should have been removed. But, toe case you have presented does not give a clue to his nature or what did occur or what was brewing between pupil and the teacher. Nor do you tell us how long the teacher has been employed In that school or if he and tfie principal were on gbhd terms. The children involved were all Negro, in an area that is race conscious and race angry. It does not stretch the Imagination too much to acknowledge that these students could have been pressured either by toe Negro parents of the community or by their own racial bitterness to “tree” this particular white man. I feel that he deserves the same justice of impartial review that we are ourselves so desper ately striving for. I feel that you have led a lot of easily guided Negroes down another path of confusion by demanding toe head of this man in the careless way you have. You have a right to your anger at what seems an affront to Ne gro ctgnity. and what seems a crime to Negro youth. That was yesterday and I cried. Today, you tell me 1 am free. For years now I still work in your kitchen because you won’t let me go too for from there to any other job. Although I rear your children, as soon as they can walk I have to call Miss Ann and Mr. Char lie. But you tell me I am free. I imagine that by telling me I scrub and cook: well is enough adulation to keep me in your t4- kitchen. Allow me to share a most frus trating situation with you. On Sunday, June 9, eight Negro teen agers quietly and~peawfully on a picnic at Rockaway Beach when' they were attacked by a group of white men. After attempting to investigate why these heathens were spitting and urinating down on them, one of these teenagers is now suffering from se\°re shock and possibly head injuries incurred after these men beat him savagely with a bottle. An accusation was made and the teenage group pointed out this riff - raff to an obviously frightened cop who asked "How do you know these are the men?” But don't you understand 1 want to know more than scrub bing floors and rearing white babies. It must be wonderful to read well and write millions of wonderful words including my name. I want to know the thrill j tect*on due to. him? Now the question 1 ask is: Must one be compelled to carry some sort of protection when out in public areas, or must one just need to be white to get the pro- of speaking correctly. When 1 can do these things, I will walk with my head high and feel proud. Thia way I won’t have to depend on you for everything. Charlie. I don’t want to be like you or take anything from you. I just want to enjoy thia land that I have slaved for. I want to exercise my talents that are hid den inside of me. Adversity is not for me forever Charlie. My children must live in a free world. They need good homes, good food, good clothes and good books. Your country (as you call it) needs them. My children won’t harm your Am erica, your great nation for all. My children have the minds that will really produce and culti vate America. If you let my children, they will show you how to be equal with the pro gress of the other countries in stead of behind. “Freedom ain’t freedom If a man ain’t free" as Langston Hughes expresses so well in the poem, “The Freedom Train”. Yesterday I suffered and cried. Not for long, Charlie, not for long. Don’t drain every drop of self control from me until I be come violent. Don’t force me to see blood that will only bring destruction to you in numerous ways. Antipathy is growing deeper and deeper inside me. Ap pease my growing anger by un derstanding what I am saying to you. Refuse and you will cry to morrow. Shaharazon Brown New York, N.Y. Race Insult S. Johnson New York, N. Y. Baldwin Fan Sir: Re: Mr. James Baldwin, I heard your speech in San Diego and it reached me in the strang est manner, and I had to write you and get a feeling of knowing you personally. I doubt if you would take time and anrrrcr this letter. But I do hope eo. I fully understand you and I recognize your gifted way of putting things. Precisely, I see the conditions of the Negro ghetto and at the same time I see the white man ghetto, that is the poor white man's ghetto. You gave me this strange perspective of the white race. I’m what you all a dedicated conscious person, who wants to help all mankind, white or black; it makes no difference. I love ail people and have a dislike for peo ple who hate any given race. There is good and bad in all rac es and it takes the sweet and bit ter to make a world. YesMr. Baldwin, the black pro letariat is still s?mi - literate and completely divided racially. I feel that it is best for them to stay this way, instead of joining an organization such „ai the Black Muslins. I might be wrong, but I think you feel the same way and if so, how about expres sing yourself in this manner. TeM the truth about the Mus lims and what they are doing to the lower class of Negroes whose cynicism and apathy are preva lent. R is my recollection that I stated tost ”1 know I apeak for the overwhelming majority of the Negro community in expressing admiration for bis record in the field of human rfcfeto. 1 f*H til* overwhelming voting nkajorities given to 4fre Mayor in predominantly Negro communities was sufficient jus tification for my remarks. I am not unaware of the concern in some circles about the sparse political patronage given to Brooklyn Negroes since bis re- election because I, too, was some what disappointed about this af ter having left the Brooklyn Democratic Organization to work for the Mayor during his tough primary battle in 1961. This, however, was not a valid reason, in my judgment, to re fuse to participate in a testimon ial dinner honoring his long re cord of achievement in toe field of civil and human rights. TI Mayor’s total record, including past patronage to minority groups should be viewed in its true per spective rather than in a pro vincial “what has he done for me lately” manner. A. J. Grant Brooklyn, N.Y. ’ ■ African History Sir: On Friday afternoon, June 7th, I made an unannounc ed visit to Dr. Elliot Shapiro’s school, PS 119, located at 257 West 133rd Street. It was a most enjoyable ex- perienee. Along the halls and stairwells, the faculty and chil dren have placed a series of exhibits dealing with toe pre- European history and culture of the African people, the heights to which Negroes in the United States have ascended and pic ture exhibits illustrating Lang ston Hughes’ poetry. It is a most worthwhile exhibit. Dr. Shapiro took me into sev eral classrooms, and in each in stance I was impressed not only with the level of teaching, but with the fact that the teachers were instilling self-pride as well as imparting academic knowl edge. My thought is this, since it 1s impossible for all of the people of Harlem and New York City to see this exhibit, perhaps you could do a photographic series of it so that others might share it with Dr. Shapiro, his faculty, and the community. Mrs. Thelma Griffith Johnson Vice-chairman Education committee Exploin Please! Dear Sir: Appearing in the New York Herald Tribune, issue of April 18th, was a UPI news story in regard to the statement made by Rep. Steven B. Derouian on the,“Paul Revere Panel” in La, South Carolina. His comment that “Agitators from the North ought to be kept out of the South” showed a basic fal lacy of reason in that racial seg regation is not a local or re gional blight, but a national and international moral issue. This statement succeeds in demon strating to many in the North and the South that bigotry is not limited to a particular section of our country. It is more of a contradiction in that Re ». Derou ian, as a representative of the northern community of Nassau County, New York, flamed the fires of segregation in toe Souto. Rep. Derouian further stated that “We don’t believe there is a higher moral law than existing law.” It Is obvious that the law that existed in Nazi Germany was not a moral lafW, nor is any law that violates the dignity and rights of any human being a moral law. The Representative went on to state that “We should not with draw interest in civil rights. We aren’t like the Democrats who talk one way in the South and another in the North.”- This is not a partisan issue, as It is not a regional one. Responsible Demo crats, Republicans, and anyone else must work together in an effort at resolving so vital a na tional and human problem. Do you think they would allow you or Martin Luther King to talk about the white Pope and get away with it in their newspapers? I can answer that for you- No. The Black Muslims think of. the Honorable Elijah Muhammad as the white Christians and the black white Christians think of their Pope. Therefore you are in sulting them by letting this devil criticize their spiritual leader. Remember, you are at black as any so called Black Muslim.
