Ariz. — A brother of Senator Barry Goldwater who is considered a candidate for the 1964 Republican Presidential nomination denied this week that the Goldwater Department Stores in Arizona discriminate against Negroes. Robert Goldwater, president of the organization, answered a charge that the stores discrimi­ nated against Negroes by saying: "It does happen that we don't have any Negro sales personnel now, but we certainly are happy to hire them when they come up to our standards. 1 don’t believe we have had an application from a Negro (for a sales position) in the past four years.” HIRE FIRST The very next day. however, the first Negro sales clerk was hired by tho store when Mrs. Ludea Williams was promoted from the stock room to a sales position in children's clothing. Miss Williams had worked for the store for 17 years. The local NAACP had claimed that several Negroes had ap­ plied recently for sales jobs at the Goldwater store but were not even given applications. Q. Form Fan Club For Billy Davis The Billy Davis Fan Club Is conducting a contest among its teenage members who must write in 100 words or less or draw a pic­ ture of what they think Billy Davis looks like. Shuttlesworth. some 14.000 Neg­ roes are now eligible to vote in .the Steel City. The tremendous registration drive has been the direct result of organized efforts on the part of some 2.000 students who were Jailed last May in the Direct Action protests in Birmingham. Upon release, and under super­ vision of SCLC staff members, the students immediately began their assault on Birmingham voter rolls.
