In 30 Days
A job recruitment program
which the White Castle Chain of
hamburger stands agreed to put
in operation ending a five-week
picketing will be reviewed for
progress at the end of 30 days
following the signing of the ac
cord.
CORE'S New York office said
periodic inspectons will be made
by its officers and the City Com
mission on Human Rights.
CORE pickets were withdrawm
last Saturday after an agreement
was reached between the civil
rights group and the Whie Cas
tle management calling for "an
immediate program for recruit
ing Negro and Puerto Rican em
ployees.” The dispute over bias
hiring practices was settled
through the conciliation service of
the City Commission on Human
Rights, after a month - long nego
tiation.
"Despite differences in the ear
ly stages of the dispute the par
ties found that with give-and-take
an agreement was attainable,’
said Madison S. Jones, CCHR ex
ecutive director.
CORE said that one of the spec
ifics of the recruitment campaign
was the agreement of the com
pany to place want ads in local
Negro and Spanish - speaking
newspapers and open two recruit
ing offices.
The agreement covers some 500
jobs in stores in Brooklyn and
Newark, picketed In sympathy
with the Bronx CORE during the
five Weeks of protest demonstra
tidhs that triggered violence at
the Allerton Ave. and Boston Rd
diner in the Bronx.

Miss Torrence
Returns From
Jamaica Year
Juanita Torrence, actress-
singer-dancer who has appeared
on stage, screen and TV in the
U. S., Europe and the Caribbean,
has returned to New York after
nearly a year’s holiday in Ja
maica, W.I., where she partici
pated in the Festival of Montego
Bay, was guest model at the
Sheraton-Kingston Hotel, and
appeared in the very successful
production of Arthur Schnitzler’s
delightful satire. "La Ronde.”
Of her theatrical efforts there,
Miss Torrence cites "La Ronde”
as the most exciting and reward
ing because it not only led to
further offers, but -gave her a
chance to act once again with a
friendly international cast with
out race or color being an issue.
"We were rather like 'one big
family.’ Broadway and Holly
wood could certainly take a cue
from this Interracial exiting,
she exclaimed.
