LOS ANGELES — The Charlea
R. Drew Medical Society of Loa
Angeles, composed of Negro phy
sicians in the Los Angeles area,
strongly protested last week the
appearance of an advertisement
in the Los Angeles County Medi
cal Association’s monthly bulle
tin which billed a forthcoming
speech by Robert Welch, a lead
er of the John Birch Society.
The Negro doctors, while sop-
porting freedom of speech, said
the Birch dogma was “contrary
to the Interests of Negro physi
cians seeking equality of oppor
tunity.”
They called upon the county
medical group to make a public
statement in the next edition of
the monthly publication denying
responsibility in promoting the
Welch speaking engagement, or
by allowing an opposing speaker
to appear on the same platform
with him.
CONSISTENT - Mr. and Mrs.
Albert Hawkins of New York,
who last week won the ABA
Life Master’s Mixed Bridge
championship for the fifth
time.

Cotillion Set
Under the auspices of the Na
tional Association of Negro Busi
ness and Professional Women's
Clubs, Inc., the national scholar
ship committee’s only fund-rais
ing project for 1963 will be a
gala cotillion and dinner-dance
in the grand ballroom of the Wal
dorf Astoria on Friday, Sept. 27
at 7:00 p.m. with 100 debutantes
being presented.
The proceeds from the affair
will be used for scholarship grants
to deserving young people
throughout the United States
most of which will be presented
at the group’s annual convention
scheduled for October 30 through
November 3 in Washington, D.C.
Fun And Sun
For Lambda
Kappa Mu
Members and friends of Up-
silonof Lambda Kappa Mu Sor
ority cast all care aside last
week-end and journeyed to Mood
us, Connecticut, for fun and re
laxation.
The extensive rolling lawn, the
inviting pool, and the genial at
mosphere made it a holiday long
to be remembered.
Leading the group was BasQ-
eus Mae Thornton, who was ac
companied by her husband.
Other metropolitan chapters of
the Sorority represented were
Alpha, Epsilon, Lambda, and Nu.
