No Higher
Rents For
Brower Pk.
That City Planning Commission
report that residents of the Brow
er Park area In Brooklyn will be
happy to pay higher rents for the
rehabilitation of their homes is
not the truth.
At least, not the whole truth
Brooklyn Tenants Welfare and
Consumers Council president,
Mrs. Laura Hall, said that “it is
not an accurate picture of ten
ants* feelings about rent lncreas-
The Council picketed a meeting
of the Children’s Museum Area
Study Committee of the commun
ity renewal program held Wed
nesday, Aug. 21, at the Brower
Park library, 725 St. Marks Ave.
Rent Hikes
Mrs. Hall made it clear that
they were not picketing the libra
ry, but wanted to draw attention
to the inaccurate notion on rent
hikes.
They also wanted to help make
tenants of the area aware “that
current proposals for financing
renewal spell out rent increases
to pay for removal of code viola
tions and general Improvement of
the landlord’s’property.”
“We want the code enforced,
and we want community renew
al,** said Mrs. Jeanne James,
community relations director.
“But we don’t want the tenant to
pay for the landlord’s lmprove-
men, that would work hardship
on the tenants.”
About 90 per cent of the popu
lation of the area are tenants,
the Council said. And meetings
with City Planning Commission
officials have been attended large
ly by representatives of land
lords.
Mrs. James said that a large
community meeting is planned to
take place after the March on
Washington so that tenants' views
will be aired before the hearing
set by the City Planning Com
mission for Sept 24. ’
as well as twist and spin services.
Gardner Mulloy, the number
one seeded player in the men’s
senior singles and the holder of
25 national championship titles,'
is in charge and will be assisted
by a host of top ranking tourna
ment contestants.
The clinic begins at 10 a.m.
Admission is free, and is spon
sored by the U. S. Lawn Tennis
Association.
