MW TDRR 27, » Wig Wearing Stirs Up A Harlem Picketing Battle AMSTERDAM NEWS Sat, Sept. 14, 1DB3• » By THOMASINA NORFORD There was the battle of the Bulge, the battle of Normandie Beach, to say nothing of the battle of Bataan in the Phil- lipines but they are minor com pared to the “battle of the wig pickets’* on W. 125th Street. A plush wig shop opened re cently with all colors, types, terms to get them and with all conveniences provided. It ap peared that no one would have to go wigless no matter for what reason one wanted to wear a wig. However with the opening came the “anti wig" group with appropriate picket signs to state their position on wig wearing. The “pro wig wearers’* counter ed with pickets and signs to match and the battle (or show, as the case might be) was on. No Horse’s Tails The “anti wig wearers” who were first on the scene carried a sign saying "Don't be a Jack ass, be natural,** another ad monished “Black women are beautiful. They don’t need white women’s discarded hair to make them beautiful;” another warn ed "If the hair is phony, the chances are the body is too.” However the anti wiggers seem ed to be at their most dramatic best when they resorted to pic tures with the slogans. One photo was of a lady who had very little forehead, very small eyes and lips the likes of which one has never seen, except perhaps on the Ubangl women who go in for beauty aid of making large lips which is their status symbol, and the artists had painted the lady a blue black. He had added blonde straggly, unstyled hair of type usually shown in Tobacco Road and normally found in the social circles of the Ozark moun tains. This lady carried the slo gan **No Congo blondes.” No Zulu Redheads Another work of art was one of essentially the same lady, but this time the artist had add ed red hair and the slogan was "No more Zulu redheads.” Another went further to add "Our womeu are beoutiful with out some dead crackers hair or horses tail." But then the “pro wig wearers” arrived with their signs which presumably they thought spoke for themselves and needed no art work to enhance them. ,. Their signs said “No naan wants a wife who looks like his broth er." Ask the girl who wears one;’’ “I decided for myself, Why don’t you” and one picketeer advised "Promise her anything, but give her a wig.” Another was provocative in its statement “We’re not the only store that sells wigs. Why picket us” and then the easy sell with "If it looks good, wear it." Try a wig and see” General Not At Battle Just what is going on in the JUSTBR1NI WIGS, OR NO WIGS -/The battle of the anti wig wearers versus the pro wig wearers Street.
