The African Methodist Episco
pal Zion Church was extolled
as "a crusade fi r freedom, lib
erty and equality." by Mayor
Wagner who also hailed its senior
bishop, the Rt. Rev. William
J. Walls, as "an active force"
in American Protestantism.
The Mayor spoke Friday night
at a banquet at the Hotel Roose
velt where Bishop Walls was hon
ored by more than 1,000 church
men, as well as by leaders of
the Protestant, Catholic and Jew
ish Faiths, on his 40th anniver
sary as a prelate.
The banquet also wound up
the denomination's week-long
emancipation centenary celebra
tion whi<;h recounted the AME
Zion Church’s 167 years of ex
istence as an "influential and
active force in the Negro freedom
struggle."
"This church has been going
to hat on its own for 167 years,
Maypr Wagner said.
On John Street
"Your church is very much
a New York church. It was
founded down on John Street in
this city, not too far from City
Hall. This church was founded
as part of a crusade for free
dom, for liberty and equality—
a crusade that sought the bless
ings of God. drawing fervent
inspiration from the Holy Book,"
the Mayor added.
The Mayor—to the
the guests—said "the very first
march for freedom on the part
of Negroes in America did not
take place on Aug 28. . .but rather
167 years ago. . when the first
members of this' congregation
gathered for a march. . .(fork
the freedom and universal broth
erhood of man under God."

Negroes in their fight for justice
and freedom.
Rabbi Tannenbaum, the most
impassioned speaker of the three
great faiths, noted that the meet
ing of Moses with Jethro, -the
priest of Midian, was "the first
encounter of the Jew with the
colored man."
"Black men and white men
must yet meet each other to
break bread together," the rabbi
declared, adding that the city’s
Jewish community, on the er*
of its new year, brought greet-
ings to their "Negrd brothers"
and renewal of their fight for
"equality" with the blessings of
God.
Dr. Blake, who has been des
cribed as the greatest living Amer
ican Protestant churchman and
one who was jailed in Maryland
during the summer for anti-dis
crimination protest demonstra
tions, said American Christians
of the majority group "have
nothing to be proud of.”
National Problem
"This (the Negro struggle for
freedom) is a national problem—
that is not located in any par
ticular section of the country, but
a problem that varies according
to section,” said Dr. Blake. "The
gospel is clear, our duty is clear,
I have confidence that God is
going to use us as instruments
for his purpose of justice, free
dom and love."
