• N. T. AMSTERDAM NEWS, Sat, Sept 21, 1963 Vacation over, period ... back on the Harlem beat, but it’s good to be back after a month of doing no thing. I shudder as I think of those beautiful and quiet days lolling in the country. Oh! 1 did play hookey away from the night clubs and taverns but 1 did stay in «t«wn long enough to play host to a group of friends at tlie annual banquet and baseball game. As usual, we had a wonderful time. It’s difficult to crowd into this space some of the interesting things we enjoyed while on vacation — but I must make men tion that I regret not being able to see Mr. Wonderful (Sammy Davis) when he appeared in the Club Har lem show. It was so sensational that many people couldn’t get in during most performances. fcfc VACATION BRIEFS P* Louise Speller celebrated her birthday in the Dawn flCafe, and Hilda MacDonald celebrated her birthday jjwith an all-day-and-night buffet in the Bird Cage. The la 1 ways neat Midway Lounge had their gala 5-year an niversary celebration. When we returned, we were glad to receive the ^encouraging news that Rose Yuen’s father was much Tbetter. The sad note we received was the death of Ih* popular Emilio Toyos, proprietor of the Madrid It was good to see Bill Lantz of Frank’s Restaurant btck from a three-month sojourn in Greece. He look ed well rested and said he had a most enjoyable time. Best news was the appointment of Chuck Williams jjfca vice president of Schenley Distillers Co. i Kenneth Moses’ comment re the appointment: “In of the high standards of application and creative laelling ability, no one could be more deserving of this ^cognition.” Coming from Ken Moses, who started $th Chuck Williams in 1951 for Schenley, it is doubly recognized. This is more than a “first”. This is a man .Who, irrespective of ethnic identity, is well prepared historically to do the job.
