City Takes Title To 455 Bldgs. The city of New York formally took title to 455 buildings la the West Side Urban Renewal area Friday in what is to become the most ambitious urban redevelop ment project in the nation's his tory. The 20-block area, bounded by 97th Street on the north and 87th Street on the South, between Cen tral Park West and Amsterdam Avenue, will undergo a major housing change in the next sev en years at an estimated cost of $180,000,000, with some buildings torn clown and replaced, others remodeled, and others converted into different type dwellings. The formal order of condemna tion was signed by Supreme Court Justice George M. Carney, giving the city title to all of the property in the renewal area. Mayor Wagner said that low in come, middle Income, and full taxpaying housing will be built in the area which now houses 6,000 people. Already officials of the city’s Housing and Redevelopment Board, Department of Real Es tate, and the Department of Re location have contacted families living in the area to keep them abreast of the developments and how soon they will be helped in finding new quarters. AMSTERDAM NEWS, Sat, Feb. 8, 1963 is PALETTE-ABLE - With her paiiette and brush, Rosita Wil liams finishes painting another Volkswagen truck. In fiveyears, ihe has painted over 500 VW vehicles for local commer cial firms. She Makes Pretty Buck From Trucks Rosita Williams is one artist who baa been given the brush both literally and figuratively A <7 year-old native of Phila delphia, Miss Williams came to New York City a little over two decades ago with one paint brush, a few dollars, and a lot of de sire. She obtained the brush af ter attending the Pennsylvania Museum of Art School. She got the brush when she tried to buck mala competition in the field of commercial art. To Late Then To overcome what she describ ed as "resentment” from her competitors and "anxiety” among her prospective clients who didn't like the idea of a working on a scaffold, Miss Williams did what so many other successful people have done She hired a press agent "The idea wa$ to have my MSB "In The Knew" Art Taking NATURES POWERFUL FORMULA 4 ombre TABLETS » luoic • Steauduc. Stimulasl agent publicize my work — not • — and make my appoint ments so that my only contact with the client would be when I showed up for work," she pointed out “In that way, the client didn’t know he had contracted with a woman to paint his sign. By then, it was too late for him to back out of the deal.” Nowadays, Miss Williams, be cause of the reputation she has built up during the last 26 years, doesn't need e press agent. Her clients are only too happy to talk with her directly. Her press agent, however, is still with her, only now he serves as her busi ness manager and assistant. A specialty of Miss Williams these days is truck painting. She works for several Volkswagen dealers in the area, Including the Brown Balk Motor Corporation in the Bronx, and Just recently completed painting her 500th VW truck — averaging nearly one every three days for the past five years. A number of com mercial firms who have pur chased VWs have Insisted on having her do their art work, sometimes for entire fleets.
