18 • N. Y. AMSTERDAM NEWS, Sat., Nov. .9, 1963 1 hope you're bearing in mind the Nov. 14 testi monial for Chuck Williams at Brooklyn’s Townhill Supper Club when the grand guy who is the first Negro to-become distilling company V.P. will be honored by the industry. “Firsts,” however, are nothing new to to Chuck. He’s Jackie Robinson's brother-in-law. Memo to fun lovers: Next Monday, Nov. 11, the Camp Funders will get together at the La Famille restaurant, 2017 Fifth Ave., near 125th St. Elaine Gray son’s going to be our hostess. We’re approaching high gear now that we’ve tucked four festive Monday evenings under our belt, topped this week with the gala at Selbra Hayes’ Mid way Lounge and the preceding one at the Gold Brick Inn. The jingle of coins we’ve tallied so far is a heart warming preview of the youthful laughter we’ll en joy next summer from the kids who profit from these affairs. We drew $84 for the affair at the Gold Brick, bringing our season's total to $749.10, including a $2.60 expense deduction. We’ll give you the adjusted total from the Midway Lounge in the next issue. Our faithful Gal Friday — or should I say, Monday — Sophia Bryant, filled in amicably for the indisposed Dottie Crawford at the Gold Brick shindig and things' were hunky dory. A word for tavern owners: We’ve tried to en courage earlier attendance at the affairs on Monday night by tavern owners themselves, not just a post midnight show-up and hasty departure. Don’t leave it up to your employes to carry the ball for you. After all, tavern keepers feel good when they see colleagues out early when their turn comes. And, all important ly, it sets the example for the general public. So, let’s get with it, folks; okay? The biggest noise at the Gold Brick was our ol’ buddy Em Tunnell, the New York Giants* superscout who basked in his full share of glory for the stunning spanking the New Yorkers applied to the ponderous bottoms of The Right Honorable James Brown, Esq., and the Cleveland gridiron gang. Em, one of the all- time great secondary defenders, makes it a point to join our get-togethers, so all of you pigskin buffs who want some inside dope had better get with it and join F There certainly was no bold-bricking at the Gold Brfck- Man, I’m telling you, those gals were really; drdssed! We can’t mention them all although I under- p stand three-fourths of the male contingent are being fitted for spectacles after trying to dig them all. Just twfi of the lassies we’ll name as paragons of all the rest: lovely Helen Cooper and Cecile Watkins who were management’s contribution to the evening. MKMC*’SIPlSU«« SCOTCH WHISKY! •Of our many wonderful donors we can only men tion a few by name, as you know, but here are a few who did it with a flourish: Marguerite Mathis, of the Tufea, $6; Linnette Phillips of Linnette’s Lounge and ' Gerri M. Lowe of Lundy’s, $5 each. And good things come in “three’s” from Helen Cooper, Willette (fast recuperating) Craine of La Famille, Fannye Pierre of the Dawn, Selbra Hayes of the Midway, and Martin D. Liss of Cutty Sark. ------- ---------------- ------- - We had nine big winners _ in the door prize stakes, too. Cutty Sark went to the Fantasia’s Frieda Harris and Mary Mack. Arthur Tynes of the Palm Cafe, grabbed the Canadian Club, Cecile Watkins cuddled up to an 8-year-old fifth of Martin’s WO scotch as did Phil (how did he get in there) Gordon with an 8- year-old Grant’s Scotch. Louise King of La Famille carried home the Sea gram’s Gin, blonde Mabel Scott of the Baby Grand boasted of her DeWar’s White Label. Paul Price pocketed the cocktail glass es and,a cat named “Slim” made off with the Sea gram’s VO. A sad farewell to old friends Charles Turner of the Fat Man and Oscar Newman, founder of the Silver Rail chain. Rest In Peace. Pearlie Mae At The Fair? As A Puppet Oo, la la!
