A Tribute To “Ma" Kline
This is a homage to one of today’s truly remark
able women, Mrs. Alberta T. (Ma) Kline, who has for
40 years helped brighten the lives of hundreds of thou
sands of people through her work with the New York
City Mission Society and Camp Minisink, the chief
recipient of our Camp Fund aid.
r' In this world of tumed-around values where char-;
latanry and pretension so often and discouragingly
earn a higher esteem than sincerity and honest labor,!
the chances of honoring the latter qualities are piti
fully few. I will remain everlastingly greatful that I
got that chance when I was invited recently to be a
dais guest as the Minisink Women’s Association cele
brated Ma Kline s near half-century of fruitful labor
at their ninth annual luncheon.
The grand ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria proper
ly resounded with her praises sung by all. As many
have said of her, “she takes the physically under
privileged and makes them feel spiritually privileged.**
Much of what she stands for is reflected in the words
of the inspiring words she gave the children of Camp
Minisink:
'
“Equal opportunity means equal responsibility;
Each day a new beginning, each day a new beginning;
By serving today’s needs, we build for tomorrow
What I do today, matters forever.”
The accomplished men and women of the city
paid her honor: the Reverends C. L. Warren, Eugene
Callender, David W. Barry, Earl B. Moore; Mmes.
Mildren Sanders, Louise Fisher Morris, Oretha Brooks,
Dorothy D. Brooks. Gladys V. Thorne and Mrs. Henry
J. Pruitt Sr.
But her highest praise came not in words but from
the living example of what she helped create, the
stirring performances of the Minisink boys and girls.
The excellent Minisink Tapawingo Chorus sang their
young hearts out in honor of “Ma” Kline and touched
all of ours who wished we could have been singing too.
This selfless and high-spirited woman has shown
the direction in which we may travel when we aspire
sincerely to our highest. It is “her” Minisink to which
the Amsterdam News, through our Monday Night
Camp Fund affairs, has contributed $7,000 over the
years and she will be the living spirit investing the
new Minisink Town House in mid-Harlem where our
camp fund will be represented by a cornerstone.
The thousands of young men and women who to
day are good citizens with healthy experiences of child
hood are the surpassing compliment that can be paid
to.our “Ma” Kline. It can truly be said of her: If you
seek her monument, look around you.

owner of the Chateau Lounge,
379 W. 125th St., was accused
of conspiring with ousted Judge
Melvin H. Osterman to bribe an
unnamed SLA official.
Although no charges have been
placed against Miss Grace Bod
ner, the grand jury indictment
of Osterman last week accuses
him of conspiring with the Chat
eau Lounge owner to bribe a pub-
jlic officer of the SLA.
The indictment alleges that
Miss Bodner gave Osterman $1,-
500 in cash with the understand
ing that part would go to the
authority official.
As a result, a 10-day suspen
sion in the sale of liquor, which
had been order against the lounge
was suspended on Jan. 25, 1962,
two days after Osterman alleg
edly had received the money.
The suspension had been order
ed on grounds that the place
had permitted gambling on the
premises.
Earlier this year the Paris-
Anderson Liquor store at 100 W.
124th St., was mentioned in the
grand jury indictment of Attor
ney Hyman D. Siegal. former law
partner of Attorney General
Louis Lefkowitz, but the owners
Iof the store were absolved of
