Peekskill Warms Up
Over Fire Companies
While the Peekskill Fire Com
panies remain cool to the accept
ance of Negro members, things
ate warming up among various
civil rights organizations chal
lenging the discriminatory posi
tion.
The Peekskill NAACP. Branch
invited the six companies of the
Peekskill Fire Department io
participate with community lead
ers in a public forum on •'Peeks
kill and Its Volunteer Fire De
partment.** None of the compa
nies attended and only one, the
Cortlandt Hook and Ladder Co.,
No. 1, acknowledged the letter of
invitation.
After the other panelists, Mrs.
Harnetha Lewis, Atty. Leone Pe-
coraro and Rev. G. F. Wiggins,
presented their views at the af
fair, which was held at the Mt.
Olivet Baptist Church, Coleman
Smith, Jr. and Edward Bowman,
two of the prospective applicants,
spoke.
Charges Run-Around
Both are taxpayers and Mr.
Smith seemed to sum up their at
titude when he said, “We’ve been
getting the run-around.**
methods are needed to correct
the situation.
Since this announcement of
plans, Sylvester Undly. who had
been given an application for the
Columbian Hose Co., was reject
ed by a vote of 33 to 4. Coleman
Smith was given an application
by the Cortlandt Hook and Lad
der Co. and his membership was
to be voted upon.
A committee of citizens head
ed by Rev. Calvin Marshall, pas
tor of the Park Street AME
Zion Church, and Dr. James
Bash and including Fr. John C.
Anderson, Mrs. Kay Moshier and
Niblo Creed met recently with
Mrs. Shirley Siegl, of the State
Attorney General’s office and re
portedly filed affidavits from the
would-be applicants.
With this background of threat
ened civil disobedience and pos
sible action by the State Attor
ney General, Caleb Peterson,
president of the Hollywood Race
Relations Bureau, returniag :o
his hometown, reported plans by
his organization to picket the Col
umbian Hose Co. this Saturday
in protest to the turning down of
the Undly application.
Rev. Wiggins presented a pro
posal which was accepted to: 1.
Adopt a program of civil disob
edience by withholding taxes un
til the situation in the Peekskill
Fire Department has been correct
ed; 2. Study the possibility of se
lective buying; 3. Publicize and
promote their intentions to end
discrimination; and 4. Strength
en their demands by demonstra
tions or whatever direct action
Mr. Peterson reportedly said
that their plans to picket would
be combined with the local
NAACP if that group planned a
larger demonstration...* He also
announced that his Bureau would
picket the national office of the
NAACP because they felt that
“the Negro was being used as a
political football.”
The Peekskill Branch promptly
issued a statement saying that

they had not been contacted by
the Hollywood Race Relations

knowledge of plans to picket the
Columbian Hose Company at this
time. We regret that Mr. Peter
son disagrees with the policy of
the national NAACP to such an
extent that he feels a need to
picket it, too.”
An NAACP spokesman said,
"All we know about this Holly
wood Bureau action is what we

Aids Foster
Parents
A major problem in recruiting
foster parents is the fact that
interested people frequently do
not know where to apply or how
to go about getting information
concerning the foster care pro
gram.
This is the experience of Very
Rev.Msgr. G. Howard Moore,
director of the Cardinal’s Cam
paign for Foster Homes. This
agency recruits ’ Catholic foster
parents for the Catholic Home
Bureau and the New York Found
ling Hospital.
“There's no doubt we would
hear from many more potential
Catholic foster parents if they
just knew where to turn for in
formation,” says Msgr. Moore.
“To help overcome this prob
lem, the Cardinal’s Campaign for
Foster Homes has prepared a
brief, informative booklet. I n
question and answer form it gives
the basic information needed by
people interested in becoming
foster parents. This includes In
formation on cash allowances for
child maintenance, clothing, med
ical and dental expenses and an
outline of the qualifications foster
parents must meet.”
Anyone interested in the foster
parents program can obtain a
copy by writing for: Brooklet B,
the Cardinal's Campaign for Fos
ter Homes, 122 East 22nd Street,
NY., N.Y. 10010.
You don’t have to
acquire a taste for it
More people prefer V.O. to any
other imported whisky—including
Scotch. Because...
Most people like the taste of V.O.
the very first time they tryit Because..,
AU drinks made with V.O. have a
special lightness. A lightness that
actually brings out the brilliance of
the whisky. A lightness you can tastt.
Try V.O. and see.
